What’s it like to stay at the Belmond Copacabana in Rio De Janeiro?  Luckily I got to find out!

Just the sound of the word Copacabana brings up romance, dancing, sun and exotic travel dreams.  And the Belmond on Copacabana Beach does not disappoint.

December is their summer, so I recommend taking a visit between December to February to get the most of the ‘Copacabana experience’.  Not only is it the perfect time to escape the cold and head to this amazing paradise on the Beach, if you are lucky enough to be there on New year’s Eve the fireworks show is out of this world.  Belmond Copacabana guests get their own private balcony for a ‘white party’ and front row seats to the massive display with champagne at the ready.

Rio De Janeiro is in Brazil, so there is an exotic feeling the minute you step off the plane. The Belmond Copacabana Beach Hotel was modeled after the famous Carlton in Cannes.  Built in 1923, you get an old world glamours feel from the moment you step inside.

The Room

The only room to get is the superior ocean view room.  As a Virtuoso member I got this amazing room with floor to ceiling windows.  Because it is an historic hotel, they did have to preserve the original design of the building and some rooms come with small rooms facing the beach.  Still, there is nothing like waking up to an ocean view!

The below room in the more modern section of the hotel was large like my Ocean Front Superior, but has a smaller window.  It’s also a large room with high ceilings and all the small touches.

The Belmond is directly across from the famed Copacabana Beach.  The Belmond Hotel has their own private section of the beach, with lounge chairs covered in plush towels with umbrellas and beach side service, Riviera style.

Or you can opt for the local small stands offering snacks like steak bites, frozen acai, and other local delicacies.  If all else fails you can go get some gelato at the famous Momo and sit in the A/C for a bit.  There is also a Gucci store just downstairs if you fee like shopping. Rio has a VAT return policy you can just buy your favorite handbag and submit the receipt to get the tax refund at the airport.

If you feel more like lounging by the pool they have a beautiful pool inside, adjacent to the restaurant and cafe for light snacks or tasty cocktails.  It’s hot in December and you will get a wonderful tan, so bring the sunscreen.

Welcome Amenity Belmond Copacabana Rio De Janeiro

Imagine walking into your room and seeing this gorgeous amenity?  Pink Bubbly on ice and some local handmade chocolates to celebrate your arrival.

I think I drank my champagne while bathing in the massive tub with their local Lavender bath foam amenities.  They also give you the famous Brazilian Havianas flip flops as house slippers and you get to take them home with you!

These local brands of soap, shampoo and lotion are excellent, unique and provide that very authentic feeling.

The staff are excellent and cater to your ever need.  This wonderful bellman would not dream of letting me carry my own luggage.

Nearly Everyone’s bucket list includes seeing the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro.  When most people think of Rio they think of the famous statue of Christ, arms held out, hugging the huge city of Rio.  It is pretty spectacular.  Especially going up to the top of the hill with a view of the entire city as you climb.

Christ the redeemer in Rio De Janeiro

I surprisingly loved it more than I expected.  It was pretty cool to not only see the statue, but also all the people trying to make these spatial distortion images.  Of course I had to do one too! Jesus touched my hand so it must have been good luck because I was safe and healthy the rest of my trip.

But Christ the Redeemer is not the only thing to do in Rio.

I was lucky enough to visit several hot spots, including the little Bohemian section of Rio called Santa Theresa.  There you could snack on cheesy bread puffs and take a bite of frozen Acai like the locals.

The Colombo Coffee house with it’s amazing Architecture for a quick espresso and tasty dessert.

Then stop by the famous Pyramid Cathedral in the Center of Rio.

What would Rio be without the Carnaval!  but if you cannot go when the actual live performance is on there is the Carnaval Experience that will tour you through the factory and show you how the floats and costumes are designed and made.  Each tells a story and actually compete in a competition for best theme, best costumes and best story.

At the end you get to try on one costume and they are heavy!  Which gives you a greater appreciation of the performers and Samba dancers who really work hard to bring the spectacular shows to life.
