Sunset Belmond Hotel Iguassu Falls Brazil

What is it like to stay at the Belmond at Iguassu Falls in Brazil?

Stunning, breathtaking, exotic and wonderful!

There are two ‘sides’ or views of the Iguassu falls.  There is the Argentina view of the Iguassu falls and Brazilian view of the Iguassu Falls.

I got the opportunity to visit Iguassu recently and stayed on the Brazilian side.  One of the best reasons to stay the Belmond Iguassu Hotel das Caratas in Brazil, is you are literally in the middle of the national park.

By staying in the middle of the National Forest you can visit before the tourists arrive and after the tourists leave.  This makes you feel like you are in a secret club where you have the falls all to yourself.

I captured this amazing sunset after all the tourists cleared out.  As the sun set, the guests and staff at the hotel gathered around to get the stunning view.

Although I have sent multiple guests here and seen 1,000 pictures, nothing can prepare you for the first time you see it in person.  It definitely takes your breath away.

Belmond Hotel Das Cataratas Iguassu Brazil

If the falls aren’t enough to impress you, the Belmond Hotel itself will do the trick.  This beautiful colonial style hotel was built in the 1920s in the middle of the Iguassu National forest.  There is a tower you can climb that has historical pictures of the hotel from the time it was built to the present.  At the very top you get a stunning panoramic view of the hotel and the falls. It’s a great place to catch a sunset photo or video.

The hotel makes you feel like you have gone back in time to the glorious old days of glamour travel.  Greeted with a cinnamon water and tasty coconut cookie treat, the staff is dressed in crisp whites and takes care of you like you just arrived at your own private Chateaux.

All rooms have hardwood floors and tall ceilings.  It would be wise to pick a Falls View room if it’s available.  Only 17 rooms have a falls view so book early!  My room was the junior suite with garden view and I didn’t mind not having the falls view, you can just walk out front of the hotel and see it any time.

Junior Suite Belmond Iguassu

The grounds are stunning with beautiful exotic plants and the sound of birds and the falls always in the distance.

If you are bored of hiking and the falls, just take a little dip in the pool and soak up some rays.  You can hear the roar of the falls even laying by the pool.  Heaven on Earth.

I have decided that my new life ambition is to visit every Belmond Hotel on the planet.  It is full of charming touches like indigenous soap from the rainforest and pink ribbons tied around every washcloth.  They give you a pair of Havainos flip flops as house shoes and you get to take them home with you!

The bathroom has unique Portugese tile and a huge bathtub

Turn down service at night not only includes their local hand made specialty chocolate or coconut dessert, but also a nice bottle of water.  They think of everything.

One great thing about staying at the Belmond in Iguassu is the park opens to the public at 9:00am and closes at 5:00pm. This means from sunrise until 9:00am and from 5:00pm until sunset 7:00pm you get the Park to yourself. Take a quiet hike and get amazing photos without the crowd. Or climb to the top of the tower and get a panoramic sunset with no crowds of people to disturb the serenity of the moment.

Here is a shot I got early in the morning.  Trail empty and beautiful wide open views.Brazill Iguassu by the belmond Hotel after hours private walk

The old hotel looks so beautiful, even with the clouds out in the morning.

But don’t forget to look out for the famed jaguars that are said to roam when the tourists leave. It’s fun to ask the hotel staff about their jaguar sightings.  Below is a warning sign of what to do when you spot a jaguar in the wild.

Be sure to get that selfie right when the sun goes down or get a full rainbow shot for your Instagram.

Imagine waking up to this view over breakfast! The food and restaurants at the Belmond Iguassu Hotel das Cataratas is heaven on earth. The Buffet carries a wide Variety of food from Brazilian to Japanese and even has gluten free bread next to the Bloody Mary station.

There are three restaurants in the Hotel.  The Buffet style service by the pool for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  The Bar, where you can order food, drinks or even get a nice little exotic Brazilian fruit flavored dessert sampler, topped with the famous local dolche de leche (basically a thick caramel syrup).

Or try a Cachaça tasting,  it is the famous Brazilian liquor from which they make their national drink, the Caipirinha.

The drink of the day was a ‘Jaguar Caipirinha’.  Passionfruit for the spots and a wooden Macaw stir stick.

They have one formal and upscale restaurant Itaipu restaurant which can be reserved on the patio with the roar of the falls in the background.  Have a Brazilian wine and some Brazilian barbeque and thank me later.

Besides hanging out by the pool, eating great food, drinking wine and walking the falls at the Belmond Hotel, you have plenty of other activities and day tours to keep you busy.

You can visit the Argentina side of the falls. I had a private guide who took me across the border getting my passport stamped going in and out of Brazil and Argentina. Since Americans no longer need a VISA it was a quick and easy expedition.

Entrance to Argentina Iguassu National Park

The Argentinian side of the falls is a completely different look and a lot more walking / hiking through the rain forest.

Iguassu Falls Argentina Side

My Favorite was a visit to the Parques Des Aves on the Argentina Side of the falls.  One of the most beautiful bird Sanctuaries I have ever seen.  They also had a butterfly and hummingbird aviary.

And don’t forget to visit the Scarlet Ibis Aviary while you are there.  Amazing!
